Word prompt, unnerving

As promised, different fandom prompts have been posted separately. Like the last post, there are additional notes under the cut.

Fandom: Hellsing

rating: PG

characters: Alucard, Integra

pairings: none, really

a/n: Throughout the manga (and later, in Hellsing Ultimate, which is a near perfect realization of the manga), it’s not exactly a secret that Alucard is exactly who his name implies rather than an unimaginative monicker. However it’s not explicitly named that yeah, he’s totally Dracula, guys, until deep into the series, near the beginning of the epic final showdown between Hellsing, Millennium, and Iscariot. Anyway, this is kind of an exploration of Integra finding out who he is in the early years of their involvement. I’d originally intended for it to be centered on Integra’s thoughts but somehow ended up in Alucard’s head.

[FIC: word prompt #4 unnerving]

Alucard was roused by the sensation of something heavy but dull hitting him square in the chest. He opened his eyes slowly to see that his attacker was his very own young master.

Her hands were balled at her hips and she looked quite angry. Incensed even. Alucard ran through the week's events, trying to decide if he'd done anything particularly offensive lately. Coming up short, he waited to see if she'd say anything or if this was the beginning of a silent treatment. Mature as she was, Integra was also a teen-age girl, and prone to bouts of sullen behavior and strange moods.

"Why did you never tell me?" She demanded.

Alucard picked up the book, which had fallen into his lap and straightened in his chair. It was one of Abraham Van Helsing's journals. He opened it at random and skimmed a couple pages, which detailed an early hunting mission for the Hellsing Organization, perpetrated by Alucard, of course. The only difference being he was referred to not by his rather uninspired monicker but his true identity.

Alucard shrugged and tossed the book aside. She must not have been told before Arthur's death. "You never asked. Anyway, it's not that important."

"Not that important?" Integra parroted with truly impressive indignation. "You're the bloody Count Dracula!"

Alucard sighed wearily and poured a glass of wine. "My master, you must forgive my witlessness, but I fail to see how my past proves relevant to the present."

"It...it means everything!" Integra protested, though doubt crept into her tone. "I would have never put my trust in you had I known you were...that monster!"

"...and yet here we are." Alucard spread his arms, showing her his palms in a vaguely submissive gesture. "Have I not followed your orders and been the obedient hound?"

Her expression twisted with confusion. Even without glimpsing into her mind, he could tell she wasn't so much angry anymore as she was deeply unsettled by the revelation. She closed her eyes and her shoulders slumped.

"You have been an excellent servant," she admitted.

He smiled, "So what's the problem?"

Integra was flustered and it was adorable. This time he did creep along the very edge of her thoughts. She didn't know why it had shaken her so deeply. Perhaps it had been the new dimension her family's work had suddenly taken. Hellsing Organization had been founded in the wake of Dracula's defeat. Their first great triumph. It had been a shock for her to learn that not only had the monster lived, but was in her family's service as a hunter of his kindred.

"I need to be alone," She told him, her voice icy. "You are barred from my presence unless you have orders."

"Of course," Alucard nodded to her, but she was already turned and walking away.

He sipped his wine but knew she'd be back soon. Alucard's long fingers caressed the old leather bound journal. He would not read it. The past was best left forgotten.
